How To Make Your Face Look Smaller In Photos

Photoshop, Meitu, MakeupPlus, Pitu and the list goes on. There are plenty of apps out there to help individuals appear slimmer in photos. However, if you’re not well-versed in photo editing, some angles might be tricky to edit, while others might look too unnatural.

The best way then, is to make yourself look as slim as possible while getting your shots taken. After searching high and low, we’re proud to present our findings.

Tilt your face

Avoid facing the camera straight on as much as possible. Light bounces off your face, highlighting your facial features while providing more depth when you look at the camera from an angle. To make your features pop even more, apply highlighter to your nose bridge and cheekbones!

Pro tip: If you have to look straight at the camera, tilt your chin down slightly to open your eyes and accentuate your cheekbones.

Find your better side

Angling your face is important but taking photos from the most ideal side is just as crucial.

To find your better side, simply take a video of yourself turning your head from left to right slowly, and tilt your chin up and down as you turn. When you’re done, review the footage and note the angles that appear more flattering. Practice posing from these angles in front of the mirror so that you’ll be more comfortable during actual photoshoots.

Facial exercise

Working out leaves you with a toned body. Similarly, exercising your facial muscles will give you a slimmer face. This translates to a smaller face on camera. Give these a try and pay special attention to The Jaw Flex (for a more defined jawline), The Chipmunk Cheek Squeeze (for a slimmer face overall) and The Cheekbone Lift (for more prominent cheekbones).

Pro tip: Holding your phone closer to eye level can help in reducing double chin as you won’t be looking downwards for a long period of time. In other words, you'll slow down the process of skin sagging as a result of gravity.

Avoid standing too close to the camera

If you’re taking a group photo, the number one rule is to ensure you’re positioned alongside your friends. Why? Because you’ll be the odd one out, and appear disproportionate compared to the rest.

This is often a struggle when it comes to snapping selfies because someone has to take one for the team. To work around this, we recommend investing in a tripod with a bluetooth clicker. If all else fails, take turns to hold the phone.
