Resumes help you secure interviews, just as your Tinder profile helps to get a meetup, eventually. To increase your chances of getting love calls from recruiters, think of how to get in their good books and impress them.

Need help getting started? Keep reading for our compilation of tips to refine your resume.

Quantify accomplishments

If you??re new to resume writing, writing a laundry list of job responsibilities would probably be the first thing that comes to mind. However, according to a past recruiter at a Fortune 100 company (top 100 companies in the US), it??s best to switch them out for your achievements.

Embrace your bragging rights and include things you can quantify. For example, instead of saying ??assisted customers daily?, say ??assisted 50 customers daily, commended by management for excellent service?. Numbers are impactful and they give recruiters a better idea of your performance.

Get inspired by Canva

Don??t fret if you aren??t gifted in the design department because there are plenty of free templates to choose from on Canva. Select one that catches your eye and make some tweaks so that it??s uniquely yours.

But of course, if you??re applying for more formal jobs where professionalism is highly regarded, tone down on the creative aspect and use more basic fonts/colours. Regardless of your selection, ensure your resume is easily readable. We recommend including short sub headers such as ??Experience?, ??Education? and ??Skills? to help AI software and recruiters retrieve details faster.

Tailor your resume to the job you??re applying for

Most recruiters sieve through resumes with the help of AI softwares. Increase your chances of getting noticed by including keywords mentioned in job postings. That said, don??t go overboard with the keywords because recruiters can sniff them out a mile away.

Include hobbies strategically

Not all hobbies are worth mentioning.

As a rule of thumb, include pastimes that help you develop positive traits or skills. For instance, stating that you play an instrument shows that you have self-discipline, creativity and confidence. Whereas playing chess shows that you have great analytical skills, patience and problem solving skills.

If you??re applying for a job that requires a high level of thinking, including chess as a hobby would put you in the spotlight. Hobbies give recruiters an insight to your personality outside of work, and you'll earn brownie points if these skills match the company??s culture.

Save your resume as a PDF

To ensure your hard work doesn??t go down the drain, never save your resume in Word format unless the recruiter specifically requested for it.

When you save your resume in PDF format, you save the recruiter the trouble of reformatting your document. PDFs preserve the format of a document and can be easily viewed on most devices.

To save your resume as a PDF on Microsoft Word:

  • Click on File > Save As
  • Select PDF from the Format drop-down menu

Name your resume

BONUS TIP: Last but not least, the most important thing that will determine if you hear back from the HR Team is the name of your resume. Recruiters are likely to have numerous resumes saved on their computer. As @slizagna mentioned, it may be the only resume on your device but on theirs, it is ??Resume (47)?.

To ensure your resume doesn??t get lost in the pool of files, always include your first and last name. For instance, ??Nick Teo - Resume? or ??Nick Teo (Resume)? - you get the drift.
