Let the camera feast first! With all the social media buzz of people wanting to share about the things they do, see and eat it is becoming a common practice to snap pictures of your food before indulging in them.

Whether you are just starting to venture into photographing a different subject (aka food!), practise your food photography skills or even starting out as a food photographer, here are some tips you can take note of before taking those delicious photos.

#1: Angles

There is no denying that angles play a huge role in any type of photography. Similarly, for food photography, the objective is to tell the story - how you want to portray the subject - in this case, is the food.

From flatlay shots to a low angle or straight angle shots, you can notice that almost all food photography uses the same angle. Well, how to determine which one looks best? Your objective! It all depends on how you want it to look and which angle fits your aesthetic and the food. And make sure you set up your composition before taking the shot.

Here are some examples of angles that you can reference;

#2: Subject Interaction

Another angle that you can consider when taking food photos is to interact with the subject. This is a good selling point If you are leaning toward creating a food blogger vibe or promoting a café or restaurant. People would also be more inclined or attracted to read about something when there is a person in the picture as it shows the human touch or warmth.

You can interact with the subject by showing off the food from your hands, the “I’m about to eat this food” pose or just simply a candid picture of you eating. Small gestures can make a big difference!

#3: Props are the bomb💣

If you are interested in a clean, minimalist look, but don’t want your pictures to look too plain or empty, elevate it by using props! Adding in just a few touches of other things to accompany your photo subject can make your subject pop and add more storytelling to your photo.

The easiest way you can start is by placing ingredients that relate to your main subject around it. Another example that you can try is a close-up shot with a spoon digging into the food or just other dishes in the background blurred - making the main subject pops out.
