Behind The Glitz and Glamour Of A Beauty Influencer

*If you love what you do, you never have to work a day in your life.* That’s the drive that pushes influencers to earn every single cent they make from their passion. But underneath all the glitz and glamour you see on Instagram; the travelling, the endorsements, the lifestyle, many are not aware of the amount of time and effort it takes to content produce.

As an influencer, it isn't solely based on advertising the products for the different brands. It is important to know that with that huge amount of following, you have a responsibility to direct your content well. Instead of just following the trend and the money, be selective with the brands you work with, post content that is genuine and that you believe in.

The 19-year-old student at UTS majoring in International Business, saw a spike in her engagement and reach when she started posting her outfit of the day pictures. Many may think that that’s all there is to it, snap and post, but a lot of work actually goes into it. Taking more than a 100 shots to finally get the perfect picture, dealing with the odd stares from passersby, the added stress of finding that perfect lighting and coming up with different poses all play important factors. Forming a caption can also take Calista anywhere between 20 to 30 minutes, because she wants it to be “very specific to be able to sell the products I’m promoting.”

Weeks of back and forth emails, research, planning and crafting all goes towards producing the content. It isn’t as simple as it seems.

Then comes the problem of late payments. After all the time and effort is put into creating the content, you’re left to chase for overdue payments. Many influencers face such rampant issues, with brands, or even PR agencies and influencer agencies. Calista explains she herself had faced an issue with this.

She recalls a service collaboration with an Eyelash Extension salon who had agreed to pay her after the service. Even after posting it to her feeds and story, they did not contact her for weeks and did not even pay the agreed fee. Calista wants to stress for influencers to collect their fee before posting any content. It’s not anything new that clients take advantage of freelancers, and is an established problem within the influencer community. How valuable is the promise of money when you’ll never see it anyway, unless you go through weeks of stressful back and forth emails.

Despite all this, Calista is very thankful for what she has been able to achieve because of social media. This leap of faith and consistent hard work has given a her a chance in landing a dream job and opportunities to create partnerships with name brand companies. So don't just put the label on an influencer as “just another pretty face who has it easy.” Understand that with every line of work comes a different set of problems and you never really know what goes on behind the scenes.
