Whether you use Instagram for business or pleasure, the Instagram Algorithm affects us all the same. Posts stopped appearing in reverse chronological order, causing a big hoo-ha back in 2016. Fast forward to 2020, many have experienced a sharp decline in engagement rates and Likes. If you're looking for tips to work around the algorithm, keep scrolling.

Ensure your content is of high quality

Attractiveness is subjective. But the first step to attract more eyeballs is to ensure you’ve got the basics figured out.

Before hitting the upload button, check that your photo is bright, sharp and contains vibrant colors. There are plenty of free photo editing apps in the market such as Lightroom, Snapseed and VSCO. If it looks like something is missing, throw on a filter and you’re well on your way.

P.S. This is one way to increase your rate of approvals for Partipost campaigns!

Post regularly and interact with your followers

Your feed is now personalized according to your past behaviour. Instagram prioritizes accounts you interact with frequently, and displays content it believes you enjoy most. In addition, the app favours posts shared most recently over those uploaded one week ago, for instance.

It is therefore a good idea to start posting consistently and upload at a prime time when your followers are most active. You can access meaningful audience insights and more by switching your account to a Creator or Business account. It is also advisable to converse with your followers more often by replying to DMs (direct messages) and asking them more questions.

Be authentic

If you’ve been buying fake likes and followers, end it today.

Instagram recognizes inauthentic activity and your posts will continue performing badly. Moreover, brands usually run checks on an influencer’s account prior to reaching out for collabs. So, if you’re looking to work with brands, it’s important to keep your account as clean as possible. Here are some ways to grow your account organically.

Use hashtags to your advantage

To extend your reach and target new followers, we highly recommend using hashtags in moderation. Not generic ones like #beauty or #foodie, but hashtags which are actually relevant to you and your content.

For instance, if you’re looking to target Singaporeans, your hashtags should be mostly localized as seen below.

Better yet, create your own hashtags to keep potential followers on your page, instead of diverting attention away from you. This is great for categorizing your content as well if you tend to post a variety of angles.
